Substitutions and Variations

 Gluten-free and fabulous
Gluten-free and fabulous

Let’s face it, most of us love to switch things up in the kitchen, whether it’s for variety, a dietary requirement or just to experiment. And when it comes to brownies, there is so much room for customization! So, let’s take a look at substitutions and variations that could take this Gluten-Free Chocolate Brownie recipe to the next level.

First, if you are looking for vegan or dairy-free options, you can easily replace the unsalted butter with coconut oil or a vegan butter substitute. In addition, you can swap out the eggs with flax or chia seeds mixed with water or use applesauce, yogurt or mashed bananas. These variations result in deliciously moist and fudgy brownies.

For those who have dietary restrictions or want to add nutrition to your baked goodies, many gluten-free flours can be used instead of regular flour. Almond flour, rice flour and oat flour are all great options that won’t affect the final product’s texture. I recommend using a mixture of different flours for a well-rounded taste.

Next up is chocolate. Dark chocolate is perfect for those who genuinely appreciate the bitter and complex flavor that comes from cacao beans. If you need something sweeter in your life, then opt for semi-sweet or milk chocolate to give your brownies a more dessert-like feel.

Lastly, if you have an adventurous palate and love experimenting with flavors, here are some variations for you: try adding shredded coconut flakes to make Coconut Chocolate Brownies or sprinkle crushed peppermint candies on top for Mint Chocolate Brownies. You can also add white chocolate chips for added sweetness and texture.

Whatever variation you choose, these brownies will still come out perfect – chewy on the inside and crispy on the outside – providing a satisfying bite every time.

Serving and Pairing

The perfect pairings for these gluten-free chocolate brownies are a cup of coffee or a glass of red wine. There is something magical about the combination of rich dark chocolate with a smooth cup of coffee or a bold red wine.

When it comes to serving, you can get creative with this recipe. I like to cut the brownies into bite-sized pieces and serve them on a large platter for guests to help themselves. You can also dust some icing sugar over the top or add a dollop of whipped cream to make them even more indulgent.

If you want to take your presentation up a notch, try adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top while the brownies are still warm. The ice cream melts into the gooey chocolate center, creating an irresistible dessert that your friends and family won’t be able to resist.

Another fun thing about this recipe is that it’s versatile enough to be served at any time of the day. They make the perfect addition to brunch, as well as a special afternoon tea treat. So whether you’re entertaining guests or just want to satisfy your sweet tooth, these gluten-free chocolate brownies will not disappoint!

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

Chocolate cravings? Check. Gluten-free? Check. Brownies? Check.
Chocolate cravings? Check. Gluten-free? Check. Brownies? Check.

Ah, the eternal question. What to do with leftover brownies? Of course, if you have any left over. In all seriousness, though, I understand your concern about making the most of your delicious creations. Luckily for you, these gluten-free chocolate brownies keep well both at room temperature and when stored away in the fridge or freezer.

If you’re planning on making these brownies ahead of time, I suggest baking them a day or so before instead of doing it last minute. Make sure they have cooled down completely before storing them on an airtight container. They should be good for 2-3 days at room temperature or up to a week if you refrigerate them.

Now, if you are blessed with an abundance of brownies and need to freeze them, go ahead! Place the whole tray on your freezer for 30 minutes then use the parchment sling to lift it out and transfer individual pieces into a freezer-safe plastic bag. They can be kept for up to 3 months inside the freezer though I doubt they will ever last that long.

And when it comes to reheating these babies, there are two options: microwave or oven. If you’re going for the microwave route (we all get those lazy moments), wrap a piece in a paper towel and heat it for around 10 seconds just until they are hot enough but still soft and squidge-y in the middle. If using an oven, preheat it to 350°F and reheat for around 5 minutes until warmed through.

So whether it’s taking your gluten-free chocolate brownies out from the fridge or freezer or reheating them after storing them away, don’t worry – they’ll still bring mucho deliciousness into your life!

Tips for Perfect Results

 One bite, one smile
One bite, one smile

Baking gluten-free brownies can be tricky, but with these tips, you will get perfect results every time.

1. Don’t overmix the batter: When you mix the wet ingredients and dry ingredients for brownies, don’t mix them too much. Over-mixing causes extra air to get inside the batter which makes the brownies cakey instead of fudgy.

2. Use room temperature eggs and butter: Many recipes call for room temperature eggs and butter, and gluten-free brownies are no exception. For airy and smooth consistency, let your eggs come to room temperature before using them in a recipe.

3. Use a kitchen scale: Baking is all about measurements, so if you don’t have a kitchen scale – invest in one! Weighing ingredients is more accurate than measuring by volume.

4. Melt and cool the chocolate: Dark chocolate chips or chunks are the key ingredient of any good flourless chocolate brownie. After melting the chocolate, allow it a bit of time to cool down before mixing it with the other ingredients.

5. Use good quality cocoa powder and chocolate: Using high-quality cocoa powder and chocolate can make a world of difference in flavor! Splurge on some quality cocoa; it’ll be worth it.

6. Bake until just set: To get fudgy gluten-free brownies, bake until just set. Over-baking even by a few minutes can cause dryness and hardness of the brownies.

7. Cool completely before slicing: It is important to let your brownies cool down completely in their pan because this will make slicing neat squares a lot easier!

With these tips, your gluten-free chocolate brownies will turn out perfectly rich, moist, and decadent every time you whip up a batch!

Gluten Free Chocolate Brownies

Gluten Free Chocolate Brownies Recipe

I found this recipe in an old recipe book at home, and have adapted it slightly to make it a bit better! The original recipe called for self raising flour, but as I made them for a friend who is a coeliac, I used gram flour instead. It's a cheap alternative, and seems to give a slightly smoother texture instead of regular gluten-free flour. If you decide to use ordinary self raising flour, omit the baking powder from the recipe, and you may not need the cream. The cream is used to thin the brownie mix, as the gram flour seems to absorb the liquid more than ordinary flour.

Ingredients

  • 300 g dark chocolate
  • 200 g milk chocolate
  • 100 g white chocolate
  • 225 g butter
  • 225 g sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 75 g grams gluten-free flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • cream

Instructions

  • Set the oven to 180°C, and grease and line a 6x6 inch tin.
  • Melt the dark chocolate and soften the butter. Mix together.
  • Beat the eggs with the sugar until pale. Stir this into the chocolate-butter mixture.
  • Break up the milk and white chocolate and add to the mixture. Add the flour and baking powder before mixing again. Add cream if the mixture seems too thick. It should slowly slide off a wooden spoon.
  • Pour the mix into the tin and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Turn the oven off, but leave the brownies in to cool.
  • Wait until cool before turning out of the tin. Cut into squares. Best served slightly warmed with vanilla ice cream.
  • Variation: Instead of using a tin, you can use muffin cases instead. It's slightly cleaner and they don't need greasing or cutting. These should take only about 25 minutes to cook.
